**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**
**Cancun, Mexico – August 2024** – Karate Newfoundland & Labrador is thrilled to announce that Emily Reglar has secured a prestigious bronze medal at the 2024 K1 Youth League in Cancun, Mexico. Competing in a highly competitive division with athletes from Europe, South America, and North America, Emily’s journey to the podium was marked by perseverance, skill, and unwavering determination.
Emily’s path to bronze was not without its challenges. In her first bout, she faced a tough opponent from Chile who was eventually the gold medalist of the division. She narrowly lost by a score of 6:3. Undeterred, Emily refocused her efforts and battled to a 0:0 tie in her second match against El Salvador. The match was decided by the judging panel, where Emily clinched the win with a 3:1 decision, showcasing her composure under pressure.
The decisive moment came in the bronze medal match against a formidable competitor from Mexico. In a tense and closely fought contest, Emily secured a 1:0 victory, effectively stealing the bronze on her opponent’s home turf. Her performance not only earned her a place on the podium but also demonstrated her ability to compete at the highest level on the international stage.
“We couldn’t be more proud of Emily’s accomplishment,” said Nathaniel Besso, Head Coach of the Newfoundland & Labrador Provincial Team. “Her resilience and determination throughout this competition were extraordinary. After a challenging start, she demonstrated incredible mental toughness to come back and win the bronze medal. This is a significant achievement and a testament to her hard work and dedication. Not only was she one of only 5 medalists for Team Canada, she is the first female Newfoundlander to medal at a WKF World Karate Circuit event!”
Reflecting on her achievement, Emily shared, “This tournament was one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced in my karate career, and I’m incredibly proud to have brought home the bronze not only for Canada but for Newfoundland and Labrador. After a difficult first match, I knew I had to stay focused and give it everything I had. Winning the final match against Mexico, on their home turf, was an unforgettable moment. I’m deeply grateful for the unwavering support from my coaches, teammates, and everyone back home who believed in me every step of the way. I can’t wait to get back home and start prepping for my next competition!”
The K1 Youth League is one of the most competitive events on the international karate calendar, drawing young talent from across the globe. Emily’s success in Cancun highlights her exceptional skill and preparation, setting a strong foundation for her future endeavors.
As Emily returns home with her well-earned bronze medal, she will get right back to work at her home club, Avalon Karate. Striving for further success in upcoming competitions she now looks to possible tournaments in Durban, South Africa, and Venice, Italy. Karate NL and the entire community look forward to supporting her as she continues to pursue her dreams in the sport. Congratulations Emily, you’ve made Newfoundland & Labrador and Canada proud!
