Karate NL is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the next provincial tournament, scheduled for February 7th, 2026 at the Holiday Inn on Portugal Cove Road. Athlete registration will close at the end of the day, January 24, 2026.
There are a few changes to be implemented in this tournament and the upcoming Provincial Championships which are tentatively scheduled for April 2026.
1. For the February 7th competition, athletes under the age of 12, will perform their kata in tandem. That means that both red and blue athletes will walk onto the tatami at the same time and perform their kata together. The officials will then pick the winner using flags in the usual manner.
For those not familiar with the format, it is commonly used in other jurisdictions and competitions, including the BC Open and US Open.
We ask that you take some time to review this format with your athletes prior to the competition.
2. The World Karate Federation and Karate Canada have informed the Provincial Sport Organizations across Canada that the safety regulations in the 2026 kumite rules must be strictly enforced and that non-WKF approved kumite equipment will not be allowed. In the past, some athletes have not had some of the required equipment or have used WKF “Style” equipment versus WKF “Approved”. This will no longer be permitted for the Provincial Championships in April. More information on this will be forwarded shortly in a separate email and can be found in the attached bulletin.
The Google registration form for everyone, athletes, officials, coaches, and volunteers, can be accessed here or on our updated Competitions Page..
